Why A Chiropractor?

About

Hey guys, it’s Dr. Ryan from Whole Family Chiropractic, your community resource center for optimal health and healing. So I was asked a while ago by a long-time patient, kind of out of the blue, “Hey Doc, why are you a chiropractor?” And I responded with a summary of my personal story. The one I discuss at our workshops about being in a peak state of health and having it all turned upside down. I talked about the injury I experienced, the debilitating vice grip of pain that left me immobile and hurting, frustrated and defeated. I talked about the suffering and ineffective medications and doctor appointments that made me feel powerless.

And then about the suggestion, I received to see a different kind of doctor, a specialist in the nervous system and the structure of the human frame. Of course, I was skeptical and hesitant, but they were persistent and I became desperate as I was watching my strength, the thing I was known for most slowly slip away. My identity was changing from an achiever to a failure, and nothing was working nor was it looking like anything would. Eventually, I said, “Okay, let’s go.” A problem was discovered in my spine that no one else was trained to find and that I was unfamiliar with. Then a solution was presented that seemed so simple. And the best part was the results were nothing short of amazing.

I not only got well, but I became better than I ever had been. Stronger, healthier, no medications, no surgeries, back to winning at life, back to physical freedom, back to confidence. Little did I know, that this doctor, this chiropractor, this man, and eventually a mentor who gave me a second chance, also showed me my true sole purpose in life, which was to be a chiropractor. This allowed me the opportunity to give back in the way I was given. Selflessly, unconditionally, and with all I have. To bless others in a way I was blessed. To give others hope and second chances. To help them maximize their potential and become the best versions of themselves. To teach others and help them recognize the truth of where health comes from. How to obtain it, restore it, and maintain it.

But then my patient, he saw me getting excited, and he said, “Yeah Doc, I know that. I know. I saw your workshop, and your story is great, and I know why you got into chiropractic. But why are you a chiropractor?” I thought about it for a moment. And first I repeated. “Well, it’s my purpose. It’s what I was put here to do. If it was between an extra breath for my life or giving a last adjustment to free up someone’s nervous system and enhance their healing capacity, I will take that adjustment 11 out of 10 times and give it to that person.”

Then I talked about how I absolutely love seeing people take responsibility and own and reclaim their health, to obtain their wishes and dreams. I love that look in their eye when they see that they can use their health as a vehicle to achieve their potential, to make the life that they want for themselves and their families. And then they put the pedal to the metal and go full speed ahead to get it with unconditional commitment. And I love and enjoy being part of that person’s journey of self-discovery, of how truly powerful they are, once they realize how important their health is to achieving what they want. So many people are stuck in a victimized mentality, characterized by possessing a youthful and vibrant spirit, but a physically limited body. To me, this is literally hell on earth. Whether it’s the battle through another headache for a loving mom that makes her lash out at her kids, or a stabbing twisting knife pain at the base of a husband’s spine that takes his breath away and freezes him and his paycheck for the next few days, or the person still feeling the effects of an accident years later, or the kid who can’t play sports because they have to puff on that inhaler.

People that have lost hope in their body’s ability to heal and are facing medications, shots, surgeries, and a lifelong dependency on interventions that only make them weaker and steal more of their quality of life away. It’s not fair. They don’t have to settle for the status quo. They don’t have to be content with complacency. The world of what they can do doesn’t have to shrink while the world of what they wanna do or wish they could do grows. What we see every day that is the most rewarding and fulfilling in people of all ages, races, and faces, is that people don’t have to weaken with time and be saddled to a flawed belief system in a sick care industry that robs them of their responsibility for their most important asset. Or makes them feel helpless and hopeless, and broken. But that they’re stronger than they ever thought because of the healing power that resides in their body and extends itself to every single one of their 70 trillion cells.

When that power is turned on, the body heals and the person can experience life again. In our office, a success story is helping people to have the life that they want in the way that they deserve it. A success story isn’t just someone who no longer has crippling pain after decades, but the one who suddenly realizes she can fulfill her lifelong dream of opening a business. The success story isn’t the removal of the chronic migraines, but that he can now help his kids with their homework and be more productive at work. A success story is someone who begins to love themselves again. They love their life again. They desire to reach their potential and maximize their gifts, talents, desires, and dreams. They do not only wanna get well but become inspired to become better than they’ve ever been. The success story is a life regained, not just the symptom removed.

This is why I’m a chiropractor. And then I was reminded of a quote by the developer of chiropractic BJ Palmer, in regards to something called the “The Big Idea.”. It goes something like this, “”A slip on the snowy sidewalk, in winter, is a small thing. It happens to millions. A fall from a ladder, in the summer, is a small thing. It also happens to millions.” The slip or fall produces a subluxation. The subluxation is a small thing. The subluxation alters posture and produces increased tension in the spinal cord or pressure on a nerve. That pressure is a small thing. That decreased energy or nerve impulse flowing produces a diseased body and brain. That’s a big thing to that man, woman, or child.

Now, multiply that sick individual by a thousand, and you control the physical and mental welfare of a city. Then multiply that person by 130 million and you forecast and can prophesy the physical and mental status of a nation. So the slip or fall, the subluxation, pressure, flow of mental impulses and diseases are big enough to control the thoughts and actions of a nation. Now comes a man or a woman. And one person is a small thing. This doctor gives an adjustment. The adjustment is a small thing. The adjustment replaces the subluxation and assists in correcting the person’s posture. That’s a small thing.

The adjusted subluxation releases tension on the spinal cord and pressure upon nerves. That’s also a small thing. The released pressure restores health to that man, woman, or child. This is a big thing to that individual. Multiply that well person by a thousand and you step up the physical and mental welfare of a city. Multiply that healthy human being by a million, and you increase the efficiency of a state. Multiply that well man, woman, or child, by 130 million, and you have produced a healthy, wealthy, and better race for posterity. So the adjustment of the subluxation to release pressure upon nerves, to restore nerve impulse flow, to restore health and improve posture, is big enough to rebuild the thoughts and actions of the world.

The idea that knows the cause, that can correct the cause of disease, is one of the biggest ideas known. Without it, nations fall. With it, nations rise. This idea is the biggest I know of. And then the patient, he looked at me and said, “Cool, is it time for my adjustment now?” I said absolutely. Let’s turn that power on and get you healing.
